BERRY - PRINCIPALITY Boisbelle-HENRICHEMONT - Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully

(1597-1641)

Maximilien de Bethune, baron de Rosny and Duc de Sully, is known as Sully. He was born at the Château de Rosny, near Mantes, 13 December 1560. Protestant and childhood friend of Henri IV, he followed the king of France in all its military campaigns where he distinguished himself by his qualities engineer. In 1590 he was wounded at the battle of Ivry. From 1596, Henri IV gave him the direction of the finances of the kingdom. He led a political economy, reducing costs and size and to promote trade, he abolished many tolls and build a lot of roads, bridges and canals. He held various important offices: in 1599 it was grand master of artillery and fortifications and chief surveyor of France, in 1602 the governor of the Bastille in 1604, superintendent of buildings, water and rivers captain, governor of Poitou. The death of Henry IV ended his political career. In 1634 Louis XIII named Marshal of France. He died at the castle of Villebon (Loir-et-Cher) 22 December 1641.
