Historical background

BERRY - LORDSHIP OF ISSOUDUN - GUILLAUME I DE CHAUVIGNY

(1212-1217)

In 1212, after the death of Raoul III, his lands returned to his sister Mahaut. Guillaume I of Chauvigny, husband of Mahaut, minted coins in Issoudun as administrator of his wife's property. In 1217, Mahaut died childless so that his lordship was divided between several distant relatives. Philippe Auguste bought the rights to the heirs and became sole master of Issoudun in 1221.
