Historical background

BEOTIA - THEBES

(288-146 BC)

Federal coinage

Thebes was besieged, taken and razed by Alexander the Great in 335 BC. The population was killed or enslaved. From 316 BC, the city was rebuilt at the instigation of Cassander. The city regained its independence in 288 BC when the Macedonian garrison evacuated the city and Demetrius Poliorcetes granted freedom to the city. The Boeotian League was reconstituted and experienced three major periods from 288 to 146 BC which marks the end of the League and its disappearance with the Roman conquest.
