Historical background

By the treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt, present-day Belgium became possession of the Austrian Habsburgs. Joseph II, the eldest son of Maria Theresa and Francis I, was clumsy and discontent grew. At the end of the reign, the Brabant revolution forced the Austrians to evacuate the country. The independence of the United States of Belgium was proclaimed January 10, 1790. The Belgian revolution did not last long and after the defeat of Falmagne, Marie-Christine of Austria and her husband Albert of Saxe-Casimir returned to Brussels. The Treaty of Basel in 1795, Belgium will be ceded to France. In 1815, it will be integrated into the Kingdom of Holland before becoming independent in 1830.
