Historical background

BELGIUM - UNITED STATES OF BELGIUM

(1790)

By the Treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt, present-day Belgium had become the possession of the Austrian Habsburgs. Joseph II, the eldest son of Maria Theresa and Francis I, had been clumsy and discontent had grown. At the end of the reign, the Brabant revolution forced the Austrians to evacuate the country. The independence of the United States of Belgium was proclaimed on January 10, 1790. This Belgian revolution lasted a short time and after the defeat of Falmagne, Marie-Christine of Austria and her husband Albert-Casimir of Saxony returned to Brussels. At the Treaty of Basel in 1795, Belgium was ceded to France. In 1815, it will be integrated into the Kingdom of Holland before becoming independent in 1830.
