Obverse description : Cavalier en armure sur un cheval galopant à gauche, coiffé du heaume, tenant les rennes de sa main gauche, une épée de sa main droite.

Obverse translation : (Baudouin d’Avesnes, seigneur de Beaumont).

Reverse legend : + (ROSE) SIGNVM (ROSE) CRVCIS (ROSE) ; LÉGENDE EXTÉRIEURE : + IN NOMINE. DOMINI. NRI. AME.

Reverse description : Croix cantonnée de quatre croissants.

Reverse translation : (Signe de la croix ; au nom de notre Seigneur, je crois en Dieu).

Commentary

Monnaie particulièrement rare absente de bon nombre de collections. Les motifs, avec le cheval portant un panache et les croix du revers cantonnée de quatre croissants sont copiés sur les monnaies de Valenciennes frappées par la mère de Baudouin, Marguerite de Constantinople, décédée en 1280.
A particularly rare coin, absent from many collections. The motifs, with the horse wearing a plume and the crosses on the reverse flanked by four crescents, are copied from the Valenciennes coins minted by Baldwin's mother, Margaret of Constantinople, who died in 1280.
