Historical background

BÉARN - LORDSHIP OF BÉARN - HENRI D'ALBRET

(1516-1555)

Henri d'Albret (1503-1555) is the son of Jean II d'Albret and Catherine de Foix. He succeeded his father in 1516. In 1527, he married Marguerite d'Angoulême (1492-1549), sister of François I. He is the father of Jeanne de Navarre (1528-1572) and the grandfather of Henri IV. It was he who rubbed his grandson with a clove of garlic and placed him in a cradle made of turtle shell at the Château de Pau.
