Historical background

BASIL II and CONSTANTINE VIII

(10/01/976-15/12/1025)

Basil II the Bulgaroctonus was the greatest emperor of the Macedonian dynasty which was shut down in 1056 with Theodora. Basil II was the son of Romanus II and Theophano. He was brought to power by his father, a child, 960. He was associated with the power under the successive reigns of Nicephorus II Phocas and John I. Constantine VIII, his brother, was subject throughout his reign and succeeded him in 1025 for only three years. Basile restored Byzantine rule in the Balkans and Asia Minor.
