Commentary

This example has an obverse similar to bga_423244. A full portrait in a “figurative style” with the small boar ensign in its hair. On the reverse, the horse is androcephalic and led by a stylized charioteer, almost reduced to a head in a pearl cord on this example!

Historical background

GALLIA - BAÏOCASSES (Area of Bayeux)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Baïocasses or Bodiocasses are not mentioned in Caesar's Gallic Wars. It is Pliny the Elder who speaks of it first. The Baiocasses occupied part of present-day Normandy, the Bessin. Their neighbors were the Unelles, the Viducasses and the Véliocasses. Their main oppidum was Augustodurum (Bayeux). Pliny (HN. IV, 107). Ptolemy (G. II, 8).
