Historical background

BAHAMAS - ELISABETH II

The seizure of power in 1967 by the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), led by blacks, put an end to white domination and paved the way for independence. On July 10, 1973, the Bahamas officially became an independent state, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, after 325 years of British rule. The PLP tries to institute reforms. But these scare away foreigners and falter the economy. Implicated in international drug trafficking, the party leadership is accused of corruption. After the cessation of this traffic thanks to the aid of the United States in the 1980s and the election in 1992 of a liberal government, the Bahamas began to recover.
