Historical background

BACTRIA - Bactrian kingdom - Menander I SOTER

(165/155-130 BC)

Menander is, according to O. Bopearachchi, the greatest monarch of Bactria. From Alexandria of the Caucasus, he was of royal blood or have belonged to the Greek aristocracy. Next Strabo (XI, 11), Menander would have extended to Greek Bactria conquering India northwest. Its capital was Sagala not yet identified. It would come into conflict with Eucratides I, causing a civil war which would have ruined Bactria. On the death of Eucratides Menander recovered part of the territory of the latter. At his death in 130 BC, the kingdom disintegrated.
