Cenabum was founded during antiquity. It was a Gallic stronghold, one of the main towns of the Carnutes tribe. Major trading port for the corporation of the nautes of the Loire, it was conquered and destroyed by Caesar in 52 BC. J. -VS. , then rebuilt in Roman style. The city has always been a strategic crossing point of the Loire because it is located on the northernmost point of the river, therefore closest to Paris.. The city experienced such an economic boom that the Roman Emperor Aurelian refounded it as the capital of a new city detached from the Carnutes.
