Historical background

AURELIANORUM CIVITAS - ORLÉANS (Loiret)

(7th-8th century)

Cenabum was founded during antiquity. It was a Gallic stronghold, one of the main towns of the Carnutes tribe. Major trading port for the corporation of the nautes of the Loire, it was conquered and destroyed by Caesar in 52 BC. J. -VS. , then rebuilt in Roman style. The city has always been a strategic crossing point of the Loire because it is located on the northernmost point of the river, therefore closest to Paris.. The city experienced such an economic boom that the Roman Emperor Aurelian refounded it as the capital of a new city detached from the Carnutes. It was named city of Aurélien then simply Orléans by simplification and phonetic evolution. Accompanied by the Vandals, the Alans cross the Loire in 408. One of their groups, led by Goar agrees to join the Roman armed forces. Aetius installs it on the Loire and in Orléans. A hundred localities in Orléans remember the settlement of this people: Allaines, Allainville, etc.. In the Middle Ages Orléans is one of the three richest cities in France with Rouen and Paris, again thanks to its proximity to Paris and its place of passage on the Loire. During the Merovingian period Orléans was the capital of the kingdom of Orléans following the division of the kingdom of Clovis I into four. The Orléans workshop was quite prolific during the Merovingian period. Its production is characterized by a wide variety of types, both for gold and silver. Source: Wikipedia. org.
