Historical background

AUSTRIA - FRANCIS JOSEPH I.

(2/12/1848-21/11/1916)

Franz Joseph I (18/081830-21/11/1916) is the son of Archduke Francis Charles and Sophie of Bavaria. He succeeded his uncle Ferdinand I of Austria in 1848 in the middle of European revolution. His throne wobbles Hungary, Bohemia, Milan and Venice. With authority he restored order and will reign on "Mitteleuropa" for 68 years. He married in 1854 Elisabeth of Bavaria (1837-1898), more known as Sissi. Their only son Rudolf (1858-1890) committed suicide with his mistress at Mayerling in 1890. The Empress Sissi was assassinated in Geneva in 1898. His nephew Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo with his wife June 28, 1914, the First World War detonator. The old emperor died in 1916 before the butchering of his empire two years later.
