Historical background

AUSTRIA - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF SALZBURG - WOLF DIETRICH OF RAITENAU

(03/03/1587-07/03/1612)

Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau came from a noble family of Swiss origin; he was born in 1559. His father was an imperial colonel and his mother countess of Hohenems. It was his father who encouraged him to become a priest. He received the chapter of Salzburg at the age of 28, in 1587. He had ten children with the daughter of the mayor of Salzburg, which prevented him from becoming a cardinal. In 1611, he let himself be influenced and attempted a coup against Bavaria. Imprisoned, he died on January 16, 1617 after a captivity of five years.
