Commentary

This hemistatery is a little light compared to the examples in the Cabinet of Medals (BN 7170, 3.82 g and BN 7171, 3.85 g). The hairstyle depicted on this coin bears comparison with the famous staters on wide flans of the Ambiens, known as “with Indian heads”!

Historical background

GALLIA - AULERCI EBUROVICES (Area of Évreux)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Aulerci were subdivided into three tribes: Aulerci Diablintes, Aulerci Cenomani and Aulerci Éburovices. The territory of Aulerques Éburovices corresponds to the current department of Eure. They are quoted several times in Caesar's Commentaries. According to the latter, they would have massacred their Senate favorable to the Romans in 56 BC and would have joined the Unelles and the revolted Lexoviens. In 52 BC, they provided a contingent of three thousand men to the relief army. : Caesar (BG.(II, 34; III, 17, 29; VII, 4, 75; VIII, 7). Kruta: 72.
