Commentary

Coin of an exceptionally rare type, with a slightly off-center right but a superb reverse on which the situla can be clearly seen, with the character lying off the side. The horse is clearly androcephalic and the charioteer holds a balled torque (?) with a third globule which ends the horse's mane. The few rare examples of this type were sold during the dispersal of collections such as that of A. Trampitsch at Jean VINCHON

Historical background

GALLIA - AULERCI DIABLINTES (Area of Jublain)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Aulerci are a very large people who are subdivided into three large tribes, including the Aulerci Diablintes who were located to the northwest of the Aulerci Cénomans, in the Mayenne basin. Gold coins are attributed to them, of the Cenoman type but with a particular reverse, as well as weakly represented billon coins, known from surface research and excavations of the late sanctuary of Juvigné..
