Obverse description : Tête d'Athéna à droite, coiffée du casque corinthien à cimier ; grènetis circulaire.

Reverse description : Zeus nu, marchant à droite, tendant la main gauche sur lequel se trouve un aigle, tenant un trident de la main droite ; un épi sur sa tige dans le champ à gauche.

Commentary

Sur cet exemplaire, la tête d’Athéna est particulière et ressemble aux monnaies d’argent du “nouveau style”. Au revers, nous avons un aigle posé sur le bras de Zeus et un épi derrière Zeus.

(3rd - 1st century BC)

Athens after the death of Alexander the Great tried to regain its independence. The Athenians were defeated at Crannon in 322 BC. Demosthenes committed suicide so as not to be delivered to Antipater. After this date, Athens only survived thanks to its past prestige. Cassander captured Athens in 317 BC and established an oligarchic regime.
