Historical background

(Fifth century BC)

Capital of Athens in the fifth century is largely based on the recovery of the treasure of the Delian League, which contained no less than five thousand talents of silver, and which served to enrich and beautify Athens oppressing the Allies. The Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC) ended the Athenian hegemony. Pericles (449-429 BC) did not live long enough to witness the fall of the city. Thucydides has immortalized the conflict in his book on the Peloponnesian War he was one of the players before himself ostracized, that is to say exile.
