Historical background

ATTICA - ATHENS

(98-192)

After Sulla's siege in 86 BC, Athens lost all political importance, but retained cultural prestige, especially under the Antonines. Hadrian was archon of Athens and initiated into the mysteries of Eleusis. He resided twice in the city and restored many monuments of the multi-secular city.
