Historical background

ARTOIS - COUNTY OF ARTOIS - ROBERT I or ROBERT II

(1236-1250-1302)

Robert I of Artois (1216-1250) is the son of Louis the Lion and Blanche of Castile. To respect the wishes of his father, Saint-Louis made the county of Artois an appanage for his brother in 1236. Robert was killed at Mansourah in 1250. It was his son Robert II who inherited the county under the regency of his mother Mathilde de Brabant and Guy II de Châtillon Saint-Pol, who had married her second mother. Robert II was killed in Kortrijk in 1302. Normally, his son would logically inherit the county, but he was killed at the Battle of Veurne. His grandson Robert III (1302-1332) inherited the county, but was dispossessed by his aunt Mahaut of Artois (1309-1329), (cf. the Accursed Kings).
