Historical background

ARDENNES - STENAY

Stenay was for a long time part of the county of Bar under the suzerainty of the counts of Luxembourg. Charles V had it returned to him by François I during the Treaty of Crespy. It was annexed to France in 1641. Louis XIV gave it in 1646 to the Prince of Condé. In 1654, the royal army commanded by Fabert seized it. It was returned to the Prince of Condé by the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659).
