Historical background

ARDENNES - DUCHY OF BOUILLON - GODEFROY-MAURICE DE LA TOUR D'AUVERGNE

(1676-1721)

Godefroy-Maurice de la Tour, son of Frédéric-Maurice de la Tour (1605-1652) and Éléonore Fébronie Catherine van der Berghet was born on June 21, 1636. He is Turenne's nephew. Since 1658, he has been Grand Chamberlain to Louis XIV and since April 19, 1662 the husband of Anne-Marie Mancini, Mazarin's niece. He had been tutelary duke of Bouillon since his father had ceded the principality of Sedan to the king to save himself during the conspiracy of Cinq-Mars in 1642. In 1675, when the king invaded Luxembourg and the bishopric of Bouillon, he constituted for Godefroy-Maurice a principality, the duchy of Bouillon, which kept it until his death in 1691. The possession of the duchy was confirmed in 1679 by the Treaty of Nijmegen. He died on July 26, 1721.
