Historical background

ARDENNES - DUCHY OF BOUILLON - PHILIPPE D'AUVERGNE

(1754-1816)

From 1756 to 1770, Philippe d'Auvergne lived in Jersey (King Street, 64-66, house visible on http://www.vingtaine.org/KingStreet.html). In 1770 he served in the English Royal Navy where he was captain of the ship and in 1783 he took part in an expedition to find the North Pole. On August 30, 1786, a diploma from the Heraldic Chamber of England recognized him from the de la Tour d'Auvergne family from an English branch established in 1232. On September 1, 1786, the Duke of Bouillon, Godefroy III de La Tour d'Auvergne adopted him as his son (cf. http://www.heraldica.org/topics/france/bouillon-doc.htm#declaration-1791). In 1793, during the Franco-English conflicts, he was given command of the Jersey fleet and established his headquarters at Gorey Castle. He was promoted vice-admiral in 1810 but was never Prince of Bouillon other than in title..
