Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé d'Arcadius à droite , tenant une haste de la main droite et le bouclier de la main gauche vu de trois quarts en avant, couronné par la main de Dieu (F’13).
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Arcadius Pius Felix Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Arcadius pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse description : Arcadius debout de face, vêtu militairement, tenant le labarum chrismé de la main droite et s'appuyant sur son bouclier de la main gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, captif assis à gauche, les mains liées dans le dos.

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Très beau buste armé. Ptéryges fines. Cet exemplaire s’est vendu 404€ avec six offres sur un maximum à 464€.

ARCADIUS

(01/19/383-05/1/408)

Arcadius was born in 377. Proclaimed august by his father on January 19, 383, he inherited the East after the death of Theodosius I. The weak Emperor let Rufin, the prefect of the Praetorium, and Eutrope, a palace eunuch, govern. Empress Eudoxia has considerable influence over the Emperor, and military power is in the hands of Gaïnas, a Goth. In 402, Arcadius associates his son Theodosius II, born the previous year, and a falling out ensues with Honorius. Arcadius dies in 408, aged 30.
