Usure importante, mais exemplaire parfaitement identifiable avec une partie des légendes lisibles. Graffiti au revers. Patine marron de collection ancienne

Reverse description : Proue de galère surmontée d’un bouclier orné d’une tête de bélier.

Commentary


G. de Loye dans son étude a répertorié 1.101 exemplaires des monnayages de Vienne, Lyon, Orange, Narbonne et Nîmes dans les grandes collections du Sud-est de la France. Avec vingt-et-un exemplaires, l’atelier d’Orange ne représente que moins de 2% du total. La plupart des exemplaires illustrés aux pages 364-366 montrent souvent des exemplaires frustes, mal conservés.

ARAUSIO - ORANGE - OCTAVIAN and AGRIPPA

Orange, "Colonia Firma Iulia Secundanorum Arausio", was founded in 35 BC by veterans of the "II Legio Gallica", whose emblem is a ram's head on a shield. The latter is found in the center of the reverse of the dupondii attributed to the city.
