Commentary

This example was cast from an original, probably in the 19th century when the process was familiar for filling holes in an incomplete tray. It is very easy to spot that this is bronzed pewter and not copper, firstly by the sound and so necessary for ductility.

Historical background

AQUITAINE - CITIES AND GENTRY

Aquitaine was one of the four great regions of Gaul, under the Romans it was divided into three provinces. Visigoth in 419, it passed to the Franks in 507. Under the Carolingians, it was a dependent kingdom most often given to the son of the king. In 877, it became a duchy which passed to the Poitevine dynasty. By the remarriage of Aliénor, the duchy passes to the Angevin dynasty of England. Confiscated by Philippe Auguste, it was returned to the Treaty of Paris in 1259 and then took the name of Guyenne. Principality of the Black Prince, it was confiscated in 1370 but only fully reconquered under Charles VII during the Battle of Castillon (1453).
