Historical background

AQUITAINE - DUCHY OF AQUITAINE - WILLIAM X

(1127-1137)

Guillaume X (1099-1137) was born in Toulouse where his father occupied the county of Toulouse in the war which opposed him to Raymond IV of Saint-Gilles (1088-1105). He succeeded his father in 1127 when Toulouse was occupied a second time (1119-1125/7). He supports the antipope Anaclet II (1130-1138) between 1130 and 1134 then reconciled with Innocent II (1130-1143). Before leaving on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela where he died, William entrusted his duchy and his daughter to the care of Louis VI le Gros (1108-1137). Louis, the king's son, married Eleanor of Aquitaine, William's daughter, in 1137.
