Historical background

AQUITAINE - DUCHY OF AQUITAINE - HENRY II PLANTAGENÊT

(1152-1169)

Henri Plantagenêt, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou, Maine and Touraine, married Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of King Louis VII of France whom he had just repudiated. Henri thus became Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou. In 1154 he inherited the throne of England and thus became the most powerful lord in the West. In 1169, he left the administration of Aquitaine to his son Richard Coeur de Lion (1169-1199).
