Commentary
This token commemorates the marriage of Louis XIV, son of Anne of Austria, and the Infanta of Spain Maria Theresa, on June 9, 1660, in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This marriage sealed the Treaty of the Pyrenees signed the previous year on Pheasant Island, located between France and Spain, on the Bidasoa River. Maria Theresa received a dowry of 500,000 gold écus, in exchange for which she agreed to renounce for herself and her descendants any claim to the Spanish succession.
