Historical background

ENGLAND - KINGDOM OF ENGLAND - EDWARD VI

(01/28/1548 1547-07/6/1553)

Edward VI was born of the union of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour who died giving birth to him, at Hampton Court, on December 12, 1537. Too young to govern when his father died in 1547, he was placed under the guardianship of a regency council largely led by his maternal uncle, Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. His uncle was overthrown in 1550 by the Duke of Northumberland who placed on the throne Jane Grey, granddaughter of Mary, sister of Henry VIII. Edward VI died at Greenwich on July 6, 1553; a war of succession then began. His half-sister Marie Tudor, known as "the bloody", emerged victorious from this conflict. Under Edward VI, England saw an expansion of Protestantism.
