Historical background

ANDRONIKOS II PALAIOLOGOS

12/1282 - 24/05/1328)

Andronicus II was the son of Michael VIII. His father associated him with power from 1272. His long reign was marked by the weakening of Byzantine power. If he was a scholar, he did not know how to manage the state. From the religious point of view, the project of religious union between the Churches of East and West was abandoned. The feudalization of the territory was generalized. From 1295, his son Michel IX was associated with him. But the latter died in 1320. He then associated his grandson, Andronicus III, son of Michael IX from 1325. The latter came into conflict with his grandfather who was forced to abdicate in 1328 and retire to a monastery where he died four years later.
