ALSACE - COUNTY OF HANAU-LICHTENBERG - PHILIP IV

(1514-1590)

The right to mint coins was granted to the Counts of Hanau in 1368, but the first coins were not minted until 1587 in the workshop of Wœrth-sur-Sauer. Jean René opened a second mint in Babenhausen. These two workshops were destroyed in 1632. Philippe IV who died in 1590. and his son, Philippe V, succeeded him. It is not always easy to attribute to Philip IV or Philip V the coins of Hanau-Lichtenberg which do not bear a year.
