Cross dimensions: 42 x 43 mm. Black ribbon with white border (width: 30 mm). The Iron Cross is a German military decoration established by Frederick William III of Prussia in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars; it was awarded without distinction of rank or social class. In 1914, it was reinstated by Wilhelm II during the First World War; it lost some of its prestige at that time as it was awarded to five million soldiers.
