Historical background

GERMANY - KINGDOM OF BAVARIA - MAXIMILIAN II JOSEPH

(1848-10/03/1864)

Maximilian II (28/11/1811-10/03/1864) was the son of Ludwig I of Bavaria and Thérèse Charlotte-Louise of Saxe-Altenburg. He married Marie de Prussia (1825-1889) in 1842 and had two sons, Louis II and Othon, who both died mad. In 1848, he succeeded his father, Louis I, who had been driven out by the Revolution and the scandals that had punctuated his life (Lola Montez). Bavaria under the reign of Maximilian II Joseph experienced a period of prosperity. With a territory of 75,000 km2, the population increased by more than one million between 1815 and 1871, rising from 3.5 million to 4.8 million..
