GERMANY - GRAND DUCHY OF BADEN
The reign of Frederick I (1856-1907) was a period of progress and prosperity: liberal legislation (emancipation of the Jews, universal suffrage, freedom of industry, abolition of denominational schools), rapid industrialization, development of railways and navigation on Lake Constance and on the Rhine. A convention ensures customs duty exemption for the waterway. Transit through the Grand Duchy of Baden is gaining in importance, both for Europe and for Switzerland.
