Historical background


ALGERIA - FOURTH REPUBLIC

Manifestations of Algerians, held on 8 May 1945 in several cities in the east, were intended to remind their nationalist claims, while enjoying the joy generated by the victory. In Setif, after clashes between police and nationalists, the event turned into a riot and angry demonstrators turned against the "French" 27 Europeans are murdered. The repression of the French army is brutal officially dead by 1500 among the natives. These massacres are considered by some historians as the real beginning of the war in Algeria.
