Historical background

ALGERIA - FOURTH REPUBLIC

The demonstrations of Algerians, which took place on May 8, 1945, in several towns in the east of the country, were to make it possible to recall their nationalist demands, while taking advantage of the jubilation generated by the victory. In Sétif, after clashes between police and nationalists, the demonstration turned into a riot and the anger of the demonstrators turned against the “French”: 27 Europeans were murdered. The repression of the French army is brutal officially killing 1,500 people among the natives. These massacres are considered by some historians to be the true beginning of the Algerian War..
