Commentary

Design for a 1 Pound note for the Isle of Pines (a small island in New Caledonia which \\\"between 1840 and 1853 ... saw many adventurers land and settle. Trading posts opened to sell sandalwood\\\" - Banknotes of the Bank of Indochina, M.Kolsky M.Muszynski, p.187). Engraving on thick Canson paper. Overall dimensions 27 x 15 cm, note dimensions 20 x 10 cm. Engraving made by Henry Cooper JERVIS (1816-) in Sydney. Four other proofs are also kept at the State Library of Sydney. According to Pam Carver's book \\\"Captain Robert Towns (1794-1873)\\\", this plate was engraved in 1848 for Robert Towns who had a trading establishment on the Isle of Pines. The latter believed that the English would take possession of the island and that a note resembling an English issue would thus be recognized as the island's official banknote. This note was never put into circulation and only this rare proof is an ancient testimony to this story!

Historical background

NEW CALEDONIA

New Caledonia was attached to the French Establishments of Oceania before becoming an autonomous colony in 1860. Overseas Territory in 1946, it chose to keep this status in 1958 and 1972. New Caledonia was discovered by Captain Cook in 1774. The French recognized the island during the Revolution. After the massacre of French sailors by the natives in 1853, France seized the island militarily and founded Noumea in 1854 under the name of Port-de-France. Until the year 1860, New Caledonia depended on the Territories of Oceania. The furthest French territory from mainland France, New Caledonia was an important penal colony between 1864 and 1896, in particular for communards, such as Louise Michel. It has significant mineral wealth, including nickel, which was used to make our coins from the half-franc to the 5-franc piece..
