Historical background

UNITED KINGDOM - LUNDY ISLAND

Lundy is a British island located in the Celtic Sea near the Bristol Channel. In 1929, Island owner Martin Coles Harman proclaimed himself "King of Lundy". He minted and put into circulation coins with his effigy of Half Puffin and One Puffin equivalent of the Half Penny and the Penny. In 1931, Harman was sentenced for illegal issue of coins: he had to pay a fine of 5 Pounds and withdraw his coins. In addition to the original 1929 issue, other so-called fantasy issues were made in 1965, 1977 and 2011..
