Historical background

SIEGE OF MAINZ

(1793)

Mainz had been invested by General Custine on October 21, 1792 and he found himself besieged there by the Prussians from April 6, 1793. The French did not surrender until July 22, 1793. Most of the 5 sols coins were overstruck, among others on monnerons of 2 floors. For the 2-floor room, there are two models, one of which has a thicker crown of oak on the right (Dr.72b). The troops who capitulated in Mainz will be sent to Vendée where they will eventually be annihilated. General Custine who had commanded the place during the siege will be guillotined for treason.
