Historical background

SAINT-MAIXENT (Deux-Sèvres)

(7th - 8th century)

The Sanctii Maxentii is ienified by Mr. Prou in Saint-Maixent, district of Niort in Deux-Sèvres. The city developed around the monastery founded in 459 by the Oratorian monk Agapit, joined in 480 by Adjutor who then took the name of Maixent. The city first bore the name of Saint-Saturnin and prospered in the 6th and 7th centuries (sources: Wikipedia). This workshop is represented by triens and deniers, some of which have been found in the treasures of Cimiez and Plassac. For silver, at least six coins have been active there but the denarii of this workshop remain very rare, known at most in two examples and unique for the most part..
