Historical background

PORTUGAL - KINGDOM OF PORTUGAL - ALFONSO V

(1438-28/08/1481)

He was born on January 15, 1432. When his father died, he was only six years old. A period of regency then began under the authority of his uncle, Pierre, Duke of Coïmbra. At ten, he married his cousin, Isabelle, daughter of the regent. The regency ended on June 9, 1448. After the capture of Constantinople (in 1453), he twice launched attempts to conquer Morocco. He died of the plague on August 28, 1481 and was buried in the monastery of Batalha.
