Historical background

PLOTINA

(+123)

Trajan's wife

Plotina, originally from Gaul, more precisely from Nîmes, married Trajan well before the latter was proclaimed august in 98. She refused the title of Augusta in 100 before finally accepting it in 105. Friend of Marciane, sister of Trajan, it promotes the rise of Hadrian. On the death of Trajan, in August 117, it was she who produced the letter by which Trajan adopted Hadrian. Honored by her adopted son, she died around 123 and was deified.
