Historical background

MOUSSY (MUNCIACO) - Seine-et-Marne

(6th century)

According to the 10th century chronicler, Nicolas Gosset, Moussy was created by a certain Munacius during the Gallo-Roman period. The village would have been called Munaciacum, then Munciacum to later become Muncy, Moncy, Moucy and finally Moussy. The denomination of le-Neuf and le-Vieux would come from the fact that Moussy-le-Vieux would have been erected as a parish first. Around 853, the clergy of the town of Sées (in the current department of Orne) fleeing the Norman invasions, obtained from Louis the German, brother of Charles the Bald, the land of Moussy, to put in safety the remains of the former superior of the monastery of Almenêches Sainte Opportune. The remains were placed in the house of a man named Gozlin, where they attracted a large number of pilgrims. With the offerings a small chapel was built and later they were transferred to the current church which was built around 1220-1222..
