Historical background

LUCANIA - LUCANIA

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

The Lucani (Lucanians) were a people of Oscan origin, settled in the Apennines, south of the Samnites in present-day Basilicata. Fighting against the Greek colonies, they were the allies of the Romans in the fight against the Samnites at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. They rallied however to Pyrrhus, then then during the second Punic war to Hannibal who abandoned them when he regained Carthage.
