Historical background

ITALY - DUCHY OF BENEVENTO - GRIMOALD III

(788-806)

Grimoald is the youngest son of Duke Arigis and Princess Adalberge. In 787, he became the hostage of Charlemagne. In August 788, after the death of his father and his older brother Romuald, he returned to Italy. By trying to get rid of Frankish suzerainty, he opposes Charlemagne and his sons. In 792, the King of the Lombards, Pepin and Charles the Younger forced him to submit.
