Commentary

Historical background

ISARNODERUS VICVUS - IZERNORE (Ain 01)

(7th - 8th century)

Izernore, commune of Ain, is located between Lyon and Geneva. Izernore is one of the selected sites that could be the location of the siege of Alésia. Some authors, like Jacques Maissiat in 1865 or Férréol Butavand in 1930 tried, in vain, to bring the proof of it. Izarnodurum (formerly Izernore) is located at the crossroads of the Roman roads coming from Geneva and Lyon. Which makes it a developed city of the time. Excavations have notably revealed the location of several Gallo-Roman villas in Bussy and Pérignat. The town has been the prey of several looting over the centuries. At the end of the 4th century, the Alamanni set fire to the city, and in the 10th century the Geldings ravaged it. This period is also marked by the birth of the brothers Saint Romain and Saint Lupicin in the hamlet of Cessiat. They are the founders of the abbey of Condat (today Saint Claude). Another inhabitant of Izernore, born in 450 became the abbot of Condat, at his canonization, he became Saint Oyand. The series of triens minted in the name of this city proves an occupation and a certain activity in the Merovingian period..
