Très belle petite monnaie sur un flan court avec des types complets mais une patine grise un peu poreuse ou cristallisée

Reverse description : Carré perlé, avec un annelet pointé au centre, accosté de quatre autres annelets pointés dans les angles.

Commentary


Ce type précis avec l’annelet pointé devant l’aigle à droite et cette composition d’annelets pointé au revers manque aux collections du musée d’Oxford. Ce type est néanmoins reproduit dans l’ouvrage de Metcalf, page 210 du Volume II, en se référant à la trouvaille de Martson (“Plumed bird variety, Marston find”).

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
