DOMBES - PRINCIPALITY DOMBES - LOUIS II OF MONTPENSIER

(1560-1582)

After the death of Pierre de Bourbon in 1503, his daughter Suzanne (1491-1521) succeeded him as lord of Trévoux. She married Charles III Duke of Bourbon-Montpensier (1489-1527), son of Gilbert, Count of Montpensier. At the death of Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of Louis XI and wife of Pierre de Bourbon, in 1522, Louise de Savoie, mother of Francis I, claiming the legacy of Dombes. Charles de Bourbon, Constable of France, betrays King Francis I and Charles V to rally dies besieging Rome in 1527. The lordship of Dombes is given to Louise de Savoie and attached to the kingdom after the death of Louise in 1531. In 1560, Francis II restores Louis II de Bourbon-Montpensier, son of Louise de Montpensier (1561) sister of the Constable Charles de Bourbon, and erects the lordship of Trévoux principality. Bourbon-Montpensier descended from Robert de Clermont, son of St. Louis. Family of Bourbon-Montpensier will rule until 1693 the Dombes.
