Exemplaire sur un tout petit flan ovale, parfaitement centré au droit, décentré au revers sur la légende. Très beau portrait. Frappe un peu molle au revers. Jolie patine marron foncé

Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin II césar à droite avec pan de paludamentum sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B*01).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Iunior Nobilissimus Cæsar”, (Constantin le jeune très noble césar).

Reverse description : Deux soldats debout face à face, vêtus militairement, tenant chacun une haste renversée et s’appuyant sur un bouclier ; au milieu, deux enseignes militaires.
Reverse translation : “Gloria Exercitus”, (La gloire de l’armée).

Commentary


Imitation de très bon style. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Ptéryges larges. Avec ce poids et ce diamètre, nous devrions avoir affaire à une émission datée à partir de 336 et taillée au 1/192 L., mais au revers nous avons deux étendards entre les deux soldats ce qui indique une fabrication antérieure à 335. Il s’agit alors bien d’une imitation de très bon style.

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
